Metamorphosis

Lyrics - Then all was Silent

The Birth

This was the beginning of the new century
Life on the earth wasn’t really easy
War prevailed in the name of God
As thousands of men would die for him

A tiny part of humanity
Grew richer and stronger day after day
While millions were falling into poverty
Silently dying

The president of the ruling nation
Had just been elected for a new term
Those who’d opposed his policy
Had been silenced for the sake of security

A tiny part of humanity
….

Ladies and Gentlemen, the President :

“Thank you, I am, I am, proud to announce to you tonight that our scientists have succeeded in giving birth to 100 human clones who will contribute to the security of our nation. God be with us.”

100 babies were born together
Under the eyes of their conceiver
All little boys, no girls at all
Identical boys, no mothers at all

100 babies were born together
Bathed in the warmth of their incubator
All little boys …….

When Kenny was sad

They all got a name and an official number
An identification mark they would have forever
All were supposed to become the new fighters
Obedient and faithful to their educators

They all got the same feeding bottle six times a day
A specially enriched vitamin cocktail
All were supposed to become robot-soldiers
But one acted quite differently from the others

When Kenny was sad
He would cry and cry all the time
When Kenny was glad
He’d smile all the time

They all got the same daylight many times a day
Artificial light to enlighten their way
All were supposed to become the new fighters
Obedient and faithful to their educators

They all heard the same messages many times a day
Gently whispered words their brain would never forget
All were supposed to become robot-soldiers
But one acted quite differently from the others

Springtime

Time had passed year after year
Spring had settled again
The children were now six
But (they) seemed much older

They followed the orders, perfect machines
Never trying to understand
No smile, no cry, no word at all
Just one boy always asking why

They spoke of the evil enemy
He dreamed he’d be a butterfly
They praised their foreign policy
He dreamed his hand would reach the sky

Flowers were budding in the fields
But no one seemed to notice them
They spent their time on exercising
Supposed to learn what is right

They followed the rules, flock of sheep
Never asking the reason why
No smile, no cry, no word at all
Just one boy always asking why

Beyond the wall

The camp they lived in
Was surrounded
By a very high concrete wall
Many times before he’d tried to learn
What was beyond the impassable fence

Don’t try to know, it’s going nowhere
Keep away from it, you won’t find anything

But Kenny was clever
He wanted to know
He started imagining
The way he could go
He was certain
They would never tell him the truth
So he’d have to find out himself

And that night was a moonless night
The right moment had come to try
All were sleeping of the same sleep
All were breathing of the same breath

Outside the rain was pouring down
Covering the noise of his flight
He desperately ran to the wall
Hoping to find the gate unlocked

All the search lights suddenly turned on
Bathing the yard in a blinding light
He heard the men running out
He was crucified by the fright

Outside the rain was pouring down….

Confinement

Kenny was arrested by the yelling guards
Thrown into a cell with chained legs and arms
They tried to make him confess his intentions
(But) he had no answer, he had so many questions

The boys were ten now but they looked like men
Ready to fight and die in pain
He had to swear he’d never cross the line again
He had no choice he was just one of them

They kept him many weeks in an obscure cell
Living in bleak, lonely isolation
They kept him awake 24 hours a day
But he had no answer, he had so many questions

The boys were ten now but they looked like men
Ready to fight and die in pain
He had to swear he’d never cross the line again
He had no choice he was just one of them

The killing machines

All seemed normal again
At camp G-William-B.
All were soldiers full of hate
For all their enemies
Waiting for their leader
To send them anywhere
Teaching democracy and freedom

Kenny was there again
Never asking why
A soldier full of hate
Knowing why he would die
They’d played him so many films
Showing their enemies
They’d told him precisely
Where the evil is

Hundreds of secret bases
Scattered in the country
Were giving birth daily
To hundreds of killing machines
Kenny was there again
Never asking why
A soldier full of hate
Knowing why he would die

The secret room

The armoured door was half open
One day he was passing by
He found this strange as the room
Was always locked

He first intended to ignore it
As he had always been taught
But he turned back and stepped
Into the dark place

Don’t be tempted said the inner voice
Don’t be tempted by the secret room

He turned on the light and stopped short
Frightened by so much daring
He knew he had gone too far
To change his mind

Scores of books were lined up
Like soldiers dressed for a general
Kenny had just found the place
He should never have found

TOP

The book

He grasped a book
With trembling hand
Called “Wonders of the earth”

He turned the pages
Page after page
Wide-open eyed, amazed

Photographs
Of an unknown world
Pictures of another world

Life beyond
The hideous wall
Life like he should
Never have known

Sky-high mountains
Deep blue oceans
Emerald forests
Page after page

Smiling faces
Different faces
Living faces
Page after page

The escape

All of them were ready to fight
Even Kenny who still dreamed of fleeing
They perfectly could do again
All the moves they’d repeated again and again

One night they were discretely flown
To a special real-training place
They walked during never-ending hours
Silently staring into space

Still longing to be free
Still longing to be free

He ran straight ahead, up and down
Hiding in the woods for days and nights
He climbed many hills and even mountains
Till the day when he saw the world in front of him

Thousands of chirping birds
(Were) flying in freedom over him
He stretched his arms and grasped
A moving cloud

(He could smell) thousands of different scents
All the perfumes of life they’d tried to hide from him
He closed his eyes and breathed
The spring breeze

Then all was silent

(It was) ten in the morning as they rose from the ground
Three lethal gunships flying fast towards the south
The day was bright and the sun high in the sky
Blazing on the valley

They followed the ground almost touching the top of the trees
Three lethal gunships on the point of slaying him
They came in sight of the place he’d been detected
Little spot on the screen

Blinded by the sun
He couldn’t see
The three dark forms in the sky

Lulled by the wind
He couldn’t hear
The rotating blades of the Cobras

He sat down on the grass, exhausted by his long run
He couldn’t forgive them for lying to him all this time
He burst into tears aware there was no way to go
The game was over

The three pilots armed their laser-guided rockets
They fired them as he was only one mile away
They saw a red burst irradiating all the sky
Then all was silent …
